Mike and I took the dogs down to Ash cave so I could put together a large picture for the upcoming PreservArt show. It still needs some tweeking, but here it is. I plan on printing the final edit 18x30 inches, so if you want to see this piece the way it was intended you will have to come down to Logan. Our opening is April 16th from 6-8pm. We will be open on Saturdays from 12-5 from April 23rd to June 4th. We will also be open during the Washboard Festival June 16-18.

Today at Shallenberger SNP there were a few things trying to bloom. It was very cold so many of the plants were closed up tight. Next to the warmth of the ground this wild ginger plants was hiding its blooms. While many of the Ginger plants had leaves up, only a few had flowers already.
This is a shot of the lawn near the edge of our woods. I personally think grass is boring, and would much rather have Spring Beauty and white and purple violets to look at. Later there will be a few other flowers mixed in, but spring is my favorite...plus it gives me an excuse to delay mowing.

Today we went on a permit hike to the new area of Boch Hollow. This is a waterfall that is off to the side of the main Robinson Falls.(aka Corkscrew falls.)
Tulips that were open just yesterday are closed tight against the cold and snow of today. Luckily it will be warming up tomorrow afternoon and we should have a much more seasonable week.
Today was a day of contrasts. This morning it was snowy and cold, and icicles were hanging off the cliffs. At the same time in more open areas we were seeing spring flowers.

At Tar Hollow State Park today a bunch of Tiger Swallowtails and Duskywings were gathered around what must have been some good mud.

At Trillium Fest today this juvenile Great Horned Owl made the unfortunate decision to take his first flight today. He swooped in over a crowd of people and crash landed in the stream. Luckily he recovered enough to get back to his feet and climb up the bank. Then he was trapped against the hill looking out into a crowd of people. After snapping this shot I left so hopefully he found a way to take flight again and back to his nest. Most people were giving him space, but there are always a few that had to be told to get back.
I found this snail trying to blend on a leaf at the rappelling area in the Hocking Hlls today. The web next to it housed a scary looking spider that I almost grabbed when I picked up the leaf. Mike says we both would have squealed.
The tulips that I planted last fall are in full bloom. Usually when I plant a mixed bag of tulips most of them end up being the same. This batch has a lot of variety.
The Bluebell trail at Three Creeks Metro park was living up to its name.

My Crap Apple Tree has always had pinkin it. This year all of the blooms are white. They are still pretty, but I miss the pink.

At Shallenberger the PreserveArt Ohio group taught wildflower photography. There weren't to many species blooming on this cool April morning, but the Large-flowered Trillium (T. grandiflorum) that covered the hillside stole the show.
This parasitic plant grows off of the roots of trees...usually oaks. The white flowers will die off and the cone will persist throughout the summer eventually turning dark brown to black. These were growing at Rhododendron Cove today among the spring beauties.
Lots of things were blooming along the creek trail at Lake Katherine SNP today, but it wasn't until we took the Calico Bush trail that we came across this beauty. This is one of Ohio's native Irises.

This Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is actually a native species, but looking close up makes it seem like something from another world.
Flea Bane has such pretty little flowers. Too bad it is growing in my driveway. At least I don't have to feel bad about picking it and bringing it inside to do a detailed focus stack on it.
I took a short hike back to a very impressive waterfall today in Hocking State Forest in the Rappelling area. This is not it. I'm sure my picture of the bigger falls will surface in a different gallery, but there was something about this little side falls I found more appealing for my Picture-A-Day project.
Related to our native Dutchmans Breeches and Squirrel Corn these flashy Bleeding Hearts are native to Japan. They grow in woodland shade and the entire plant usually dies back in the heat of summer.
