Looking at my website I realized that I had not posted about the last three books that I have designed. The FCCWCO has a very talented group of writers and they work together to create some excellent themed fiction. Inexperienced writers get the chance to tell their stories and get feedback from more experienced writers who help hone the work into an entertaining read.
I have been tasked with book and cover design for these three books.
Their first anthology was “Before and After,” which follows people as they decide what to do on the last day of the earth (a space accident sends a planet killing object hurtling toward earth), and how they deal with what they have done the next day when the disaster is averted. It’s a fun read and it was quite the challenge creating the cover. I used a photo I had taken of the moon and created the rest in photoshop using pictures of rocks and creating special effects. It is available on Amazon here.
The second is a modern retelling of fairy tales called “Fairy-less tales.” Lots of fun takes on how modern life changes how fairy tale characters live their lives and what challenges they face. The cover for that book involved the search for a second hand set of fancy shoes to photograph, and combining a spooky tree tunnel taken at a metro park south of Dayton with a city scene from downtown Columbus. It is available on Amazon here.
The third one just came out in late 2021, and because of delays with author copies wasn’t in the hands of club members until early 2022. It is called “The Wishing Box: Be careful what you wish for” and is a story about a magical box that grants wishes…that don’t go so well. For the cover on this one I built and painted the wooden box, created a wishing mechanism out of polymer clay, made a magic wand, and got a top hat. Mike (my husband) didn’t want to be on the cover, but he was the only model I had… I think I managed to disguise him well enough that no one really can tell it is him. It was a fun photo shoot and edit. That book can be found on Amazon here.
As always, if you are local, you can get books directly from Mike. We have copies of “Before and After” and “The Wishing Box.” You will have to order the “Fairyless Tales” though.
