Side Trips – Mitchell Corn Palace

I remembered stopping here from a trip when I was growing up. It was a chance to get out of the car, stretch our legs, and get souvenirs. We stopped in on this trip even though we had just been out and about at the Wilder farm. Its only a little over an hour away from the homestead, but it was also on the way to the Bad Lands NP which was one of our main destinations. It was late and they were closing soon, so we had the place to ourselves. It was fun to look around, but not as special as I had remembered from my childhood.
The corn palace is decorated every year with a new theme, and all the decorations are created with naturally colored corn, grains, and grasses.

While I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to see it, it does make for a fun stop to get out of the car and stretch your legs. It’s a quick stop near the interstate to refresh a bit on your way west.
