Yellow Springs

On September 13th, 2016, we went to Yellow springs to hike the Glen Helen Nature Preserve. First stop was a large sunflower field along the way. Many of the flowers had faded, but a few still remained. Next stop was Glen Helen. It is a private preserve, so there is a $2 fee for parking. There is a circular trail that takes you to all of the main attractions including the Yellow Spring. The trails are well maintained but not marked well. We missed our turns a couple of times. Other people were asking directions, so it is best to print and take a map with you. After that we went into the town of Yellow Springs. It has a fun artsy vibe to it. There are two restored mills in the area. Grinnell Mill has been converted into a Bed and Breakfast. There is no water there and the mills water wheel is stationary. The second mill, Clifton Mill, has been converted into a restaurant and store. Water is piped up to the sluiceway to run the wheel, while water runs naturally below the mill. It is a bit tacky with large numbers of string lights covering the building, but was an interesting place to visit. Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve and John Bryan State Park are also in the area.
